AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) – Aurora firefighters are warning people about the dangers of thin ice.

On Sunday the department’s dive team was at the Aurora Reservoir practicing ice rescues. They say in eastern Colorado the ice is never totally safe, and the recent warm weather is making conditions especially dangerous.

One of the biggest problems is pets running out on the ice and falling through.

“Take their cellphones when they walk their dog. Do not unchain your dog or unleash your dog because it’s usually the unleashed animals that go into the water,” Cpt. Mike Ackman with the Aurora Fire Department said. “It’s real tough for people to watch a pet struggling in the water without going in.”

One deadly example of those dangers happened south of Colorado Springs on Saturday. A man tried to save his pet when he fell through the ice. The dog survived but the owner did not.
